Dating from before the time of Christ
and remaining in use for several centuries after,
the merchant ships of the Roman Empire represented
an important stage in the evolution of the cargo
ship.
Roman cargo
ships demonstrated great uniformity in their design.
With the high level of maritime commerce within the
Empire, innovations and improvements were quickly
shared and disseminated within the ship industry.
Some of these vessels
were very large, up to 180 feet long, like the ones
used for carrying grain from the fertile Nile valley
to Rome.
