ACR-12
Battleship USS North Carolina BB-55 is the lead ship of her
battleship class. She was the first vessel of
the type built for the United States Navy under
the Washington Treaty system. USS North Carolina was laid
down in 1937 and completed in April 1941, while the
United States was still neutral during World War II. BB-55 took part
in every major naval offensive in the Pacific war to
become the most highly decorated American battleship
of World War II, accumulating 15 battle stars (USS
Missouri received 11 battle stars.)
On 6 September 1961, USS
North Carolina was transferred to the state. After her
berth was completed, she was formally opened as a museum
on 29 April 1962. In 1964, a Kingfisher that had crashed
in British Columbia, Canada, during the war and then
subsequently salvaged was donated to the museum. The
battleship was declared a National Historic Landmark on
10 November 1982. BB-55 is in excellent condition and
remained in her wartime configuration.
