Among the most famous old sailing ships still
extant, Cutty Sark was one.
She is the most famous tea clipper built, and is the only one that survives.
In 1869, Cutty Sark set out
to be the best clipper of all those in the golden
age of sailing. She met her destiny three
years later by crushing the fastest clipper at the
time, Thermopylae. The 963-ton Cutty Sark’s daily
sailing distance averaged 163 miles, reaching speeds
as high as 14 knots.
The
term Cutty Sark means short shirt or short skirt and
the term was shouted by Tam O'Shanter in Robert
Burns poem of the same name Tam O'Shanter the shout
being "Weel done Cutty Sark" as witches and warlocks
were dancing a reel in an ancient abbey in Scotland.
Cutty Sark,
the beautiful clipper ship launched at Dumbarton on
the Scottish Clyde, was renowned throughout the
seafaring world and won a place in the hearts of
British seamen, coming second only to Nelson's own
immortal H.M.S. Victory.
Cutty Sark now stayed at a
dry-dock at Greenwich.
