USS Constitution

Built in Boston to defend the young American nation, USS Constitution is as old as the document for which George Washington and Congress named her.

“Old Ironsides’” planks were hand made American oak up to seven inches thick. The ship's design was unique for its time because of a diagonal cross bracing of the ship's skeleton frame that contributed considerably to the ship's astounding structural strength. Paul Revere forged the copper spikes and bolts that held the planks in place and the copper sheathing that protected the hull.

During ferocious the battle with HMS Guerriere in 1812, the seamen, astonished at how the British cannonballs were bouncing off the Constitution's hull, cried out - "Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!" Hence, her nickname, "Old Ironsides."

With an acre of sail and a slim underbody, Constitution had a remarkable top speed of 14 knots. This made her faster than any ships of the line and frigates.

USS Constitution was never defeated in battle.   In 1844, she became the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe.  She is now the world’s oldest commissioned warship still afloat.
