SS CONSTITUTION

The SS Constitution was an ocean liner owned by American Export Lines. She was commissioned in 1951, in a period of great optimism in America after WWII.

The SS Constitution's interiors were entrusted to Henry Dreyfus, a very prominent American designer who believed in comfort combined with simplicity and who looked after every detail, from the funnel colors to match book covers.  Export Lines said of his work, "Dreyfus, charged to provide the utmost comfort for every passenger in each of the three classes has produced innumerable refinements that set new standards for living at sea."

The SS Constitution was featured in several episodes of the television situation comedy I Love Lucy starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, starting with episode 140, "Bon Voyage," which first aired 1 December 1955. In 1956, Grace Kelly sailed aboard the SS Constitution from New York to Monaco for her wedding to Prince Rainier.  In 1957, The SS Constitution was featured in An Affair to Remember starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The ship was also appeared prominently in the Magnum, P.I. television series, in the episode titled "All Thieves on Deck," which aired 30 January 1986.

The SS Constitution was retired in 1995 and, while under tow to be scrapped on 17 November 1997, sank 700 nautical miles north of the Hawaiian Islands.

This primarily wood SS Constitution is 15" long. The base is 20".
