GREEK BIREME
Bireme
was invented by the Phoenicians. Their usage dates
back to 250-400 BC when they were used for the first
time as warships. At that ancient time they
measured only a few meters in length but proved to be
very tough and powerful.
At the
time when bireme was deployed extensively by the Greeks
during the famous Trojan War, they became much larger. The
pointed keel was an effective weapon for ramming enemy
vessels in close-quarter battles and boarding.
Strong and
beautiful sailing ships, Greek Bireme were also used for
transportation. The Romans employed bireme
extensively. Caesar's invasions of Britain saw
much action from the bireme.
