TYPE 45 DARING CLASS DESTROYER

Type 45 Destroyers are the backbone of the Royal Navy. After the launch of the HMS Daring in February 2006, Admiral Sir Alan West stated that it would be the Royal Navy's most capable destroyer ever, as well as the world's best air-defense ship.

The class is primarily designed for anti-aircraft and anti-missile warfare and is built around the PAAMS (Sea Viper) air-defense system utilizing the SAMPSON AESA and the S1850M long-range radars. Its ferocious Sea Viper missile can down a flying targets 70 miles away. during an "intensive attack", a single Type 45 could simultaneously track, engage and destroy more targets than five Type 42 destroyers operating together.

Type 45 is fitted with a Fully Integrated Communications System (FICS45), which provides voice, intercom, data links and conference calls both internally and externally. It is also equipped with communication’s suite includes a Meteorology and Oceanography (METOC) system, which provide the ship with total awareness of the surrounding environment.

The Type 45 destroyers are 500 ft in length, with a beam of 69 ft 7 in, and a displacement of approximately 8,500 tonnes. This makes them significantly larger than the Type 42 they replace. The design of the Type 45 brings new levels of radar signature reduction to the Royal Navy. Deck equipment and life rafts are concealed behind the ship's superstructure panels, producing a very "clean" superstructure. The mast is also sparingly equipped externally. This design gives the ship the radar cross-section of a small fishing boat.

The Type 45 is fitted with an advanced and innovative integrated electric propulsion system. This integrated electric propulsion allows the electric motors to be placed closer to the propeller, thus shortening the shaftline, obviating the need for a gearbox or controllable pitch propellers, and reducing exposure to action damage. Also, the prime movers (diesel generators and gas turbine alternators) are positioned at convenient locations away from the shaftline, thus reducing the space lost to funnels, while at the same time improving access for maintenance and engine changes.

The combination of greater efficiency and high fuel capacity gives an endurance of 7,000 nautical miles. High power density and the hydrodynamic efficiency of a longer hull form allow high speeds to be sustained. Type 45 destroyers can reach a speed of 29 knots in 70 seconds and achieved a speed of 31.5 knots in 120 seconds.

This primarily wood Type 45 Daring class destroyer model is 24" long x 9.5" tall x 6" wide $2,400 Shipping and insurance in the US included. Other countries: $250 flat rate.

Let us know the ship of your interest and we'll place its logo and number on the model for you: HMS Daring, HMS Diamond, HMS Dauntless, HMS Duncan, HMS Dragon, HMS Defender.

We also have the HMS Queen Elizabeth model here: Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier

Tip:
When you view a model ship, use a large-screen device, as a phone is too small and all models will appear the same or different marginally. Look for photos of all angles, photos that clearly show the guns, propellers, radars... Do not assume a model that looks pretty good from afar is actually good. It's the accuracy that counts. Intricate details also take much more time to make and require higher skill.
