HMS ASTUTE submarine model

The HMS Astute is the lead boat of the latest class of nuclear-powered fleet submarines in service with the British Royal Navy. The class sets a new standard for the Royal Navy in terms of weapons load, communication facilities nd stealth. HMS Astute was launched in 2007, commissioned in 2010, and fully operational in May 2014.

The Astute class submarines were designed to be fitted with a Dry Deck Shelter (DDS) which significantly enhances their ability to deliver special forces. The DDS is approximately 13m long by 3m diameter. The DDS is not a permanent fixture and is designed to be attached or removed from a submarine. The aft section of the sail on the Astute class boats have removable panels. Securing points on the casing, hull penetrations, piping for high-pressure air and electrical supplies are in place ready to receive the DDS. When the DDS has fitted, this chamber is mated to the ‘hangar’ which can accommodate either a Swimmer Delivery Vehicle (SDV) or up to 20 divers and their equipment. HMS Astute first deployed with the DDS on an 8-month patrol in 2014 and HMS Artful currently carries the DDS which she first received in late 2016.

Weapons and systems of the HMS Astute:

The Astute class has stowage for 38 weapons and would typically carry both Spearfish heavy torpedoes and Tomahawk Block IV cruise missiles, the latter costing £870,000 each. The Tomahawk missiles are capable of hitting a target to within a few yards within a range of 1,240 miles. The Astute Combat Management System is an evolved version of the Submarine Command System used on other classes of British submarine. The system receives data from the boat's sensors and displays real time imagery on all command consoles. The submarines also have Atlas Hydrographic DESO 25 high-precision echosounders, two CM010 non-hull-penetrating optronic masts - in place of conventional periscopes - which carry thermal imaging and low-light TV and colour CCD TV sensors.

For detecting enemy ships and submarines the Astute class are equipped with the sophisticated Thales Underwater Systems Sonar 2076, an integrated passive/active search and attack sonar suite with bow, intercept, flank and towed arrays. The 2076 represents a step change over previous sonars and is the world's most advanced and effective sonar system.

In 2012, during simulated battles with the United States Navy's latest Virginia-class submarine, it was reported that the Americans were "taken aback" by Astute's capabilities. Royal Navy Commander Iain Breckenridge was quoted saying: “Our sonar is fantastic and I have never before experienced holding a submarine at the range we were holding USS New Mexico. The Americans were utterly taken aback, blown away with what they were seeing.”

ModelShipMaster.com builds any submarine models, at virtually any sizes. When you are choosing a reputable builder for your favorite submarine, look for large photos showing details to verify if a model is worth the title "museum quality" as wildly claimed by some. Do not assume a model that looks good from far away (in smaller photos) is actually good. It's the accuracy and craftsmanship that count and only large photos can tell you that.
