LOS ANGELES CLASS
submarine model

The Los Angeles class of submarines are nuclear-powered attack submarines equipped for anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, show-of-force missions, insertion of Special Forces, strike missions, mining and search and rescue. Also known as the LA-class or the 688-class,62 submarines were built from 1972 to 1996, the latter 23 to an improved 688i standard.

los angeles class

The Los Angeles Class submarines are equipped with a vertical launch missile system that are armed with both the land-attack and anti-ship version of the Tomahawk missile from Raytheon. The land-attack Tomahawk has a range of 2,500km and can be fitted with a nuclear warhead. The anti-ship Tomahawk missile is equipped with an inertial guidance and an active radar and anti-radiation homing head. The range is up to 450km. The submarine  is also fitted with four 533mm torpedo tubes located midships together with a Mark 117 torpedo fire control system. The Gould Mark 48 torpedoes combat both high-performance surface ships and fast deep-diving submarines. The torpedo is capable of operating with or without wire guidance and uses either or both active and passive homing. It is equipped with multiple re-attack modes which operate if the target ship is missed. The torpedo carries out programmed target search, acquisition and attack procedures.

As of 2020, 32 of the Los Angeles class remain in commission — more than any other class in the world — and they account for more than half of the U.S. Navy's 53 fast attack submarines. These submarines form the backbone of the U.S. Navy’s submarine force.

Of the 30 retired boats, a few were in commission for nearly 40 years, including USS Dallas (SSN-700), USS Jacksonville (SSN-699) and USS Bremerton (SSN-698).

USS Dallas's keel was laid down in October 1976 by General Dynamics Corporation. She was launched in April 1979 and commissioned in July 1981.  Dallas was the first submarine of the Los Angeles class to be originally built with an all-digital fire control (tracking and weapon) system and sonar system.

USS Dallas has a removable Dry Deck Shelter. This large chamber, fitted aft of the sail, allows Dallas to employ the latest submarine arsenal: the Swimmer Delivery Vehicle — a highly mobile and virtually undetectable means of carrying out special forces missions.

Dallas' design combines unmatched endurance and speed with the ultimate in submarine stealth. Her armament consists of the heavyweight MK-48 ADCAP (Advanced Capability) torpedoes, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and all variants of the Tomahawk cruise missile, as well as both variants of the Navy's submarine launched mines. USS Dallas' capabilities include anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship warfare, special forces delivery, reconnaissance, carrier battle group support and escort, and land-attack.  Her Tomahawk cruise missiles can hit on target on 75 percent of the Earth's land surface

USS Dallas SSN-700 was retired in 2017 and many hope that that she will become a museum ship at the Dallas Maritime Museum.  The boat had been deployed more than a dozen times, traveled over a million miles and starred in a great movie The Hunt for Red October. Other Los Angeles-class in film includes the USS Chicago in Red Storm Rising, and the USS Cheyenne in SSN. Clancy discusses the USS Miami in-depth during the 1993 non-fiction book Submarine: A Guided Tour Inside a Nuclear Warship
