USS TRITON submarine

Commissioned in 1959, USS Triton (SSN 586) was designed as a radar picket submarine, and featured two nuclear reactors, two screws, a knife-edge bulbous bow, and the largest sail ever for an American submarine to house its large radar dish. Triton completed the first submerged circumnavigation of the globe in May 1960.

At the time of her commissioning in 1959, Triton was the largest, most powerful, and most expensive submarine ever built at $109 million excluding the cost of nuclear fuel and reactors ($956 million today.)

USS Triton had the distinction of being the only US submarine powered by two nuclear reactors.

In the early 1960s, she was the first vessel to execute a submerged circumnavigation of the Earth.

Triton's mission as a radar picket submarine was made obsolete after two years by the introduction of the carrier-based Grumman WF-2 Tracer airborne early warning aircraft in 1964. The SSR/SSRN mission was quickly phased out.

USS Triton was converted to an attack submarine in 1962 and became the flagship for the Commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet in 1964. She was decommissioned in 1969, the first U.S. nuclear submarine to be taken out of service.

Triton's sail superstructure was saved from the recycling process and is now part of the USS Triton Submarine Memorial Park located on Port of Benton Boulevard in Richland, Washington.

Our primarily wood USS Triton submarine model comes in two great sizes for your proud display:

- 27" long (1/200 scale) $1,790  Shipping and insurance in the contiguous US included. Other places: $200 flat rate.

- 37.5" long (1/144 scale) $2,470  Shipping and insurance in the contiguous US included. Other places: $300 flat rate.

Models are built per commissions only. We require only a small deposit (not full amount, not even half) to start the process $500. The remaining balance won't be due until the model is completed, in 3-4 months.

Compare this model against the others on the Internet to see how superior our Triton submarine model is. We might not have the highest number of submarine models but every single one we had a chance built is far accurate than other builders. 100% money back guarantee if you can spot a better wooden Triton  submarine. No restocking fee, no questions asked. If you think you've found a model that is better than ours, please go here for a reward.

ModelShipMaster.com builds any submarine models, at virtually any sizes. When you are choosing a reputable builder for your favorite submarine, look for large photos showing details to verify if a model is worth the title "museum quality" as wildly claimed by many. Do not assume a model that looks good from far away (in smaller photos) is actually good. It's the accuracy and craftsmanship that count and only large photos can tell you that.
