USS TULLIBEE submarine

USS Tullibee (SSN-597) is a unique submarine. She was designed for anti-submarine warfare, a completely new mission for submarines. SSN-597 was the very first of a series of quiet, nuclear-powered hunter-killer submarines.

Although being the 14th nuclear-powered sub for the United States, she was the first with turbo-electric drive (TED), and could remain on station silently awaiting her prey, and pounce without warning. She had a low-frequency passive array for long range detection – called Passive Underwater Fire Control Feasibility System (PUFFS); and was the first to carry spherical bow sonar for localization and attack, which necessitated having her torpedo tubes located amidships instead of the traditional forward position.

Tullibee was the smallest nuclear-powered attack submarine in the US submarine fleet. The initial manning complement was 7 officers and 60 enlisted men. She was just 273 feet long and had 2,640 tons displacement.

During her career, Tullibee conducted many submarine firsts. During her commissioned service she submerged and surfaced 730 times and traveled 325,000 nautical miles, equal to the distance from the earth to the moon and halfway back.

Tullibee was a pioneer in the Navy’s efforts to make a quieter submarine. Many of her design features, such as the bow-mounted spherical sonar array, became standard.

This primarily wood USS Tullibee submarine model is 23" long (1/144 scale). Total dimensions, including the base is 25" x 6.5" x 4". It is in stock and can be shipped within three business days.  $1,600  Shipping and insurance in the US included. Canada: $90, 0ther countries: $200 flat rate.

We offer two version: new and slightly rusted. Either one has TULLIBEE on both sides of the hull. Compare this model against the others on the Internet to see how far superior our submarine model is. One thing is clear that the menacing USS Tullibee did not have many colors, and the tower was not too narrow. The beautiful inlaid base was designed by our team to augment the model, with real wood light-brown stripe that is flush with the surface.

When you are choosing a reputable builder for your favorite submarine, look for large photos showing details to verify if a model is worth the title "museum quality" as wildly claimed by some. Remember that models might look good from afar but can disappoint when held in your hands.

ModelShipMaster builds any models, at virtually any sizes. Your model will become a pride display that ignites pleasant conversations. The following will be completed in group of four, every several months. Every model we make is guaranteed to be considerably more accurate than those of Motion Models and SD Model Makers. Contact us at Services@ModelShipMaser.com to inquire.
