USS HANNAH

The schooner Hannah was the first vessel of the United States Navy.  She was the first armed American naval vessel of the American Revolution, authorized by the Continental Congress and operated by the Continental Army.

Hannah was acquired on August 24, 1775. Her first captain was Nicholson Broughton, a captain in the Army. She was utilized to aid George Washington in the siege of Boston by capturing provision ships making for the harbor from British ports. On September 7, Hannah captured the Royal Navy sloop Unity with naval stores and provisions.

The USS Hannah's brief naval career ended on 10 October 1775, when she was run aground near Beverly by the British sloop Nautilus. After a 4 hour engagement between the British ship and Beverly and Salem militias on the shore, Hannah was saved from destruction. Nautilus was badly damaged, but managed to escape. According to the New England Chronicle dated 12 October 1775, "...no lives were lost on our side, and the Privateer [Hannah] was damaged little if any".

Hannah was a fishing schooner owned by John Glover of Marblehead, Massachusetts and was named for his daughter Hannah. The crew was drawn largely from the town of Marblehead, with much of the ships ammunition being stored in Glover's warehouse.
